Prepare Your Vertical Surfaces
Effective surface preparation is essential for successful application!
- Start by thoroughly saturating the wood surface with clean water using a spray.
- Cleanse the surface using a product like CPR Log Brightener and Cleaner, applying it with either a garden sprayer or a heavy nap roller cover.
- Allow the cleaning solution to remain on the wood for 5-20 minutes. During this period, utilize a hard bristle brush to scrub the surface, aiding in the removal of mill glaze and/or weathering. Ensure the solution does not dry on the wood.
- Rinse off the solution using a pressure washer set at no more than 500 psi, maintaining a distance of at least 12 inches from the surface to prevent wood damage.
- Allow the surface to dry for a full 3 days before proceeding with the application. Keep in mind that surfaces not exposed to direct sunlight may require additional drying time.
Additional Notes:
- New rough-sawn wood should be brushed with a stiff-bristled brush to eliminate loose dirt and fibers. If debris persists, follow the log preparation procedures.
- Weathered wood affected by blue fungi or rust from nails may be treated after surface preparation by applying a solution of 4 ounces of oxalic acid crystals in a gallon of warm water. Allow the solution to sit on the affected areas for 15-20 minutes before the final rinse with clean water. Allow to dry for 3 days before coating.
Moisture Content Check
Avoid applying Sikkens Log and Siding to wood with over 18% moisture content, as it can lead to mold and mildew growth beneath the surface, causing peeling and lifting over time. Utilize a moisture meter to test the moisture content of your wood. Here’s how:
- Laminated logs generally have a moisture content below 14% and are typically ready for immediate application of Cetol Log & Siding after cleaning and drying.
- For kiln-dried or air-dried logs, use a moisture meter to check.
- Green, wet, or treated logs typically have a moisture content greater than 18%. Allow them to sit in a dry area and regularly check their moisture content. They may take up to 6 months to 1 year to reach the appropriate moisture content for applying Cetol Log & Siding.
Apply a Wood Preservative (Borate)
If your logs haven’t been pre-treated with a wood preservative (borate) at the factory or mill, consider applying one before using Sikkens Cetol Log & Siding. Wood preservatives make wood toxic to wood-damaging organisms such as powder post beetles, carpenter ants, and fungi, providing long-term protection for your home.
Caulk Gaps and Checks 1/4″ or Larger
Wood naturally develops cracks and checks over time due to changing seasons and aging. Fill all joints, cracks, and nail holes 1/4″ or larger with a quality acrylic latex caulk/filler such as Sashco’s Log Jam Chinking or Conceal Textured Log Caulking.
Stain Testing
Perform a two-coat color test on a clean, dry, bare area of the structure before applying Sikkens Cetol Log & Siding. Ensure the color selection matches your preference and has a manageable maintenance schedule.
Please Note:
- Tannin-containing woods such as redwood, red cedar, mahogany, and douglas fir may cause discoloration in the stain, especially noticeable with white or light colors. Clean with a solution of 4 ounces of oxalic acid to one gallon of warm water before application.
Application
Sikkens Cetol Log & Siding is a two-coat application on clean, dry, bare wood. Apply one even coat, let it dry for a minimum of 24 hours, then apply the second coat. Follow application procedures on the container and ensure proper mixing and stirring before and during application. Avoid applying in direct sunlight or adverse weather conditions.
Maintenance
Regular maintenance is essential for the longevity of your log home. Inspect and maintain logs annually, filling any checks or cracks and performing a maintenance cleaning with CPR Log Brightener and Cleaner. Re-apply Sikkens Log & Siding every 2-3 years on south and west-exposed walls, and every 3-4 years on north and east-exposed walls.
Shipping Restrictions
Sikkens Log & Siding is available for ground shipment only.
Stain Calculator
Measured Square Footage
Take each wall and multiply length x height. Example 40' long x 10' high= 400 sq. ft.
Add each wall together 400 + 400 + 250 + 250 = 1300 sq. ft. Example 400 sq. ft. x 4= 1600 sq. ft.
For each of your gable ends (the triangles) use Base x Height/2
Example 30' x 15' = 450'/2 = 225 sq ft. Add all areas together.
Adjust for Type of Log
A round log has a different surface area than a flat timber. We must account for the curvature and size of the log so we don't end up short on stain. Select your log type
Maintenance Coat
Most maintenance coats are done with one coat, often clear. If you plan to add a coat of color and a clear, feel free to ask one of our specialists for some advice.
Surface Condition
Rough logs will take more stain than smooth logs. If your logs are rough, check off the box and it will calculate based on a rough surface.
Note: All calculations are estimated. Actual coverage will vary based on surface condition, species and moisture content.
David Friesen –
We have used Sikkens Log and Siding for close to 20 years on our home and love it. This year we switched to the Maintenance clear coat to go over top. Finally they came out with a clear coat to keep the house from getting darker each time we apply it. We will never put another stain on our home other than this, very satisfied.
Tom Pratt –
My father had Sikkens on his home and swore by it. We have used for 9 years now and couldn’t be happier with it. Love this stain!!
