Sikkens has undergone a rebranding and is now known as Sico Proluxe. Despite the name change, rest assured that the tried-and-true formula you’ve relied on remains unchanged, with only minor adjustments to the labels. The hallmark quality associated with the Sikkens brand persists, ensuring consistent performance whether it’s labeled as Sikkens, ProLuxe, or Sico.
For those looking to maintain the natural appearance and color of their wood over time, consider using Sikkens Cetol Maintenance RE. SURFACE PREPARATION
Prepare Your Logs
Effective Preparation is Key to Application Success!
- Start by thoroughly wetting the wood surface with clean water using a spray.
- Utilize a product like CPR Log Brightener and Cleaner, applying it with either a garden sprayer or a heavy nap roller cover.
- Allow the cleaning solution to remain on the wood for 5-20 minutes, ensuring it doesn’t dry on the surface.
- Rinse the solution from the bottom of the wall, moving upwards, employing a pressure washer set at 500-800 psi and standing 8-12 inches away from the surface to prevent any damage.
- Test the rinse water with a pH strip to guarantee no bleach residue remains, which can lead to streaking and adhesion problems. The rinse water should register a pH range between 6.5 and 7.
- Allow the surface to dry for a full 3 days before proceeding with the application. Note that surfaces not exposed to direct sunlight may require additional drying time.
Caulk All Gaps and Checks
Due to natural processes and aging, wood often develops cracks and checks over time.
- After applying a wood preservative, fill any gaps between logs and upward-facing cracks/checks in the wood with a high-quality acrylic latex caulk/filler such as Sashco’s Log Jam Chinking or Conceal Textured Log Caulking.
Weather Considerations
Ensure the air and surface temperature falls within the range of 50°F (10°C) to 90°F (32°C) during application. Avoid direct sunlight during the application process, and refrain from applying if there is a chance of rain, snow, heavy dew, or temperatures dropping below 40°F (4°C) within the next 48 hours.
Application Guidelines
- Cetol Maintenance can be applied over Sikkens Log & Siding or Cetol 23 Plus finishes that exhibit a dull appearance but are otherwise in good condition, with no bubbling, peeling, or flaking.
- Apply Sikkens Cetol Maintenance RE wood finish within four weeks of surface cleaning, provided the surface remains free of dirt, grease, grime, and mildew.
- Ensure you have enough product for the entire job and mix all products thoroughly before beginning.
- Stir the product well before and periodically during application, and avoid thinning it.
- While brushing is the preferred method, if using a roller or airless sprayer, immediately back brush to ensure thorough penetration and to achieve a uniform finish. For airless spray, use a .009”-.011” tip at 700 – 800 psi, adjusting pressure as needed.
- Apply a single even coat of Cetol Maintenance RE Wood Finish, avoiding heavy application, and always follow the direction of the wood grain.
- To prevent lap marks, start at one edge and maintain a wet edge as you work your way across each board. If possible, coat all end grains and the back of all boards.
Note: Tannin-containing woods such as redwood, red cedar, mahogany, and douglas fir may cause discoloration in the stain, particularly noticeable with light colors. Clean with a solution of four (4) ounces of oxalic acid to one gallon of warm water using a garden sprayer or a heavy nap roller cover.
Shipping Restrictions
Sikkens Cetol Maintenance RE is available for ground shipment only.
Stain Calculator
Measured Square Footage
Take each wall and multiply length x height. Example 40' long x 10' high= 400 sq. ft.
Add each wall together 400 + 400 + 250 + 250 = 1300 sq. ft. Example 400 sq. ft. x 4= 1600 sq. ft.
For each of your gable ends (the triangles) use Base x Height/2
Example 30' x 15' = 450'/2 = 225 sq ft. Add all areas together.
Adjust for Type of Log
A round log has a different surface area than a flat timber. We must account for the curvature and size of the log so we don't end up short on stain. Select your log type
Maintenance Coat
Most maintenance coats are done with one coat, often clear. If you plan to add a coat of color and a clear, feel free to ask one of our specialists for some advice.
Surface Condition
Rough logs will take more stain than smooth logs. If your logs are rough, check off the box and it will calculate based on a rough surface.
Note: All calculations are estimated. Actual coverage will vary based on surface condition, species and moisture content.

Hooray!!! We have been asking for this product for years. Our only complaint we have had with Sikkens is that over time it kept getting darker. It was so nice to see they came out with this. We applied which gave us a nice face lift, but no color change. Thriled this is finally here.

So hard to find this stuff but we didn’t have any troubles getting it here. Nice to see this product is finally available as we didn’t love that our original color kept getting darker. This is a great solution for that.

Giant Score!!!! We have been using Sikkens on the house for 15+ years but each time we did it got darker and further away from the color we loved. Now with this clear coat, we can still get the protection but don’t have to deal with a color we no longer love. Thank you for finally coming out with this Sikkens!!
