Cleaning Recommendations:
- Begin by spraying all wood surfaces with clean water, ensuring thorough saturation.
- Apply a generous amount of cleaning solution, such as CPR Log Brightener and Cleaner, using a garden sprayer or heavy nap roller cover.
- Allow the solution to sit on the wood for 5-20 minutes, while scrubbing the surface with a hard bristle brush to remove mill glaze or weathering. Ensure the solution does not dry on the wood.
- Power wash the cleaning solution from the wood using plenty of clean fresh water. Use a pressure of 500 psi with the nozzle positioned 8-12 inches from the surface for optimal cleaning and to prevent damage to the wood.
- Allow the surface to dry for at least 48 hours, or until the moisture content is 18% or less, before proceeding with finishing.
- Sand all horizontal surfaces using 80-120 grit sandpaper, following the wood grain direction, and remove sanding dust.
- For horizontal surfaces (decks), apply Cetol 1 RE Wood Finish within one week of preparation. For vertical surfaces (siding), apply within four weeks, ensuring the surface remains clean and free of dirt, grease, grime, and mildew.
Special Notes:
- Sikkens Cetol 1 RE does not contain lead or mercury.
- New rough-sawn wood less than four weeks old should be dry-brushed with stiff bristles to remove loose dirt and fibers before following the preparation procedures.
- Weathered grey wood or wood affected by blue fungi or rust from nails may be treated by applying a solution of oxalic acid crystals and warm water before rinsing with clean water and allowing to dry.
- Always perform a full system color test on a wood sample before application.
- Previous coatings must be removed before applying Cetol 1 RE and Cetol 23 RE System.
- Cetol 1 RE is always used as the first coat in any bare wood application, and all systems consist of three coats.
Preparing Different Wood Types:
- Previously Coated Wood: Remove all previous stains, varnishes, or sealers before applying Cetol 1 RE.
- New Wood: Clean and prepare all wood surfaces. Pressure treated wood should be properly seasoned, dry, and free of salts before staining. Water-repellent treated lumber requires a minimum of one year of weathering before cleaning and application.
- Weathered Uncoated Wood: Clean and prepare the surface as specified above.
- Exotic Hardwoods: Clean and prepare the wood surfaces as specified. Wipe the surface with acetone immediately before applying the coating.
Checking Moisture Content Before Staining:
- Ensure the wood’s moisture content is below 18% before applying Cetol 1 RE to prevent issues such as mold and mildew growth, peeling, cracking, and failure over time. Use a Moisture Meter to test the wood’s moisture content before staining.
Caulking Cracks, Checks, and Gaps:
- Fill all joints, cracks, and nail holes with a quality acrylic latex caulk/filler before applying Cetol 1 RE. Seal any upward-facing cracks or checks immediately to prevent future rot or decay. Larger cracks may require Closed Cell Backer Rod for insulation and proper sealing.
Sikkens Cetol 1 RE Cleanup & Shelf Life:
- Clean tools immediately with mineral spirits and spills with a damp cloth.
- Shelf Life: Maximum 5 years unopened.
Sikkens Cetol 1 RE Maintenance Instructions:
- Inspect the surface visually to determine when maintenance is required. Apply a maintenance coat when the sheen appears dull or wood starts to turn grey.
- Apply maintenance coats as needed, with hardwoods and lighter colors potentially requiring more frequent maintenance.
- Perform maintenance every 2-3 years on south and west exposures, and 3-4 years on north and east exposures, adjusting as necessary based on weathering and exposure conditions.
- Store a coated board indoors to compare with the exterior surface periodically to determine maintenance needs.
- Prepare the surface with a product like CPR Log Brightener & Cleaner before applying a maintenance coat.
- Apply one coat of Sikkens Cetol 23 Plus or Cetol Maintenance RE after power washing and allowing the surface to dry for 3 days.
- For outdoor furniture and fences, apply a maintenance coat of Sikkens Cetol 1 RE every one to two years.
- Inspect corners, butt joints, windows, doors, and new cracks annually to maintain your log home’s integrity.

Stain Calculator
Measured Square Footage
Take each wall and multiply length x height. Example 40' long x 10' high= 400 sq. ft.
Add each wall together 400 + 400 + 250 + 250 = 1300 sq. ft. Example 400 sq. ft. x 4= 1600 sq. ft.
For each of your gable ends (the triangles) use Base x Height/2
Example 30' x 15' = 450'/2 = 225 sq ft. Add all areas together.
Adjust for Type of Log
A round log has a different surface area than a flat timber. We must account for the curvature and size of the log so we don't end up short on stain. Select your log type
Maintenance Coat
Most maintenance coats are done with one coat, often clear. If you plan to add a coat of color and a clear, feel free to ask one of our specialists for some advice.
Surface Condition
Rough logs will take more stain than smooth logs. If your logs are rough, check off the box and it will calculate based on a rough surface.
Note: All calculations are estimated. Actual coverage will vary based on surface condition, species and moisture content.

Love this stuff! Glad we could find it here.

My parents have this on their log home and are always talking about how it is the best. I like that it lasts long as I am the one doing the maintenance to their place. We got it shipped to Ontario and it was quick and pleasantly inexpensive. Now I have work to do lol.
Adam Nelson –
We have been using this on our deck. Yes, yes we know it isn’t made for that. We don’t use the top coat, just this one and it works fantastic on our deck. Have the same on our fence with 3 coats of it.
