Wood Surface Cleaning Guidelines:
Start by thoroughly saturating all wood surfaces with clean water using a gentle spray, ensuring complete wetting.
Apply an ample amount of a suitable cleaning solution, such as CPR Log Brightener and Cleaner, using either a garden sprayer for larger areas or a heavy nap roller cover for more controlled application.
Allow the cleaning solution to dwell on the wood surface for a duration of 5 to 20 minutes. During this time, diligently scrub the surface with a stiff bristle brush to effectively remove any mill glaze or weathering. It’s crucial to keep the surface wet with the solution and prevent it from drying out.
Rinse the wood surface thoroughly with copious amounts of clean, fresh water using a power washer set to a moderate pressure range of 500 to 800 psi. Maintain a safe distance of 8 to 12 inches between the nozzle and the surface to ensure effective cleaning without causing damage to the wood fibers.
After rinsing, allow the wood surface to air dry naturally for a minimum of 48 hours. Alternatively, ensure the moisture content of the wood is 18% or lower before proceeding with any finishing applications.
To achieve optimal wood surface porosity and uniformity, follow up with sanding using appropriate grit sandpaper. For vertical surfaces, use 80 to 120 grit sandpaper, while horizontal surfaces benefit from 60 to 80 grit sandpaper. Always sand in the direction of the wood grain to avoid creating unsightly scratches, and thoroughly remove any sanding dust.
It’s essential to adhere to the recommended timeline for applying Sikkens Cetol 1 Re Wood Finish and Sikkens Cetol 23 Plus RE Top Coat. For horizontal surfaces like decks, application should occur within one week of preparation. Vertical surfaces such as siding allow a window of four weeks, provided the surface remains free of dirt, grease, and mildew.
Important Additional Notes:
- Sikkens Cetol 23 RE formulations do not contain lead or mercury-based materials, ensuring environmental safety.
- New rough-sawn wood requires specific attention, including dry-brushing with stiff bristles to remove loose debris and fibers, enhancing surface preparation.
- Special treatments for weathered wood or wood affected by blue fungi or rust from nails may be necessary post-surface preparation, ensuring optimal coating adhesion and longevity.
- Always conduct a comprehensive system color test on a wood sample to gauge the final appearance before committing to the full application process.
- Previous coatings must be diligently removed to ensure proper adhesion and performance of the Sikkens Cetol 1 RE and Cetol 23 RE System.
- The prescribed three-coat system offers comprehensive protection and durability, ensuring longevity and aesthetic appeal.
Specific Instructions for Different Wood Types:
- Proper preparation for previously coated wood involves thorough removal of existing stains, varnishes, or sealers, ensuring a clean substrate for optimal coating performance.
- New wood surfaces require meticulous cleaning and preparation to remove any surface contaminants and ensure proper adhesion of subsequent coatings.
- Weathered, uncoated wood surfaces must undergo the same cleaning and preparation steps to restore them to an optimal condition for coating application.
- Exotic hardwoods such as Ipe, mahogany, and teak present unique challenges due to their dense cell structure. Wipe the surface with acetone immediately before applying the coating to ensure proper penetration and adhesion.
Moisture Content Testing and Caulking Recommendations:
- Ensure the wood’s moisture content is below 18% before applying Sikkens Cetol 23 RE to prevent issues such as mold, mildew, and coating failure.
- Use a Moisture Meter to accurately assess the wood’s moisture content before starting the staining process, ensuring long-lasting results.
- Proper caulking of cracks, checks, and gaps is essential for preventing water intrusion and subsequent wood damage. Use high-quality acrylic latex caulk/filler to seal any openings before applying the stain.
Application Details and Maintenance Instructions:
- Thoroughly test wood absorbency before starting the application process, ensuring the wood is ready to accept the stain and finish.
- Apply coatings within the recommended temperature range of 10°C to 32°C (50°F to 90°F) and avoid direct sunlight or adverse weather conditions during application.
- After proper preparation, apply one even coat of Sikkens Cetol 1 RE Wood Finish followed by two coats of Sikkens Cetol 23 Plus RE Top Coat, adhering to specific application instructions and drying times.
- Regular maintenance, including visual inspections and timely application of maintenance coats, is crucial for preserving the wood’s protective characteristics and aesthetic appeal over time.

Stain Calculator
Measured Square Footage
Take each wall and multiply length x height. Example 40' long x 10' high= 400 sq. ft.
Add each wall together 400 + 400 + 250 + 250 = 1300 sq. ft. Example 400 sq. ft. x 4= 1600 sq. ft.
For each of your gable ends (the triangles) use Base x Height/2
Example 30' x 15' = 450'/2 = 225 sq ft. Add all areas together.
Adjust for Type of Log
A round log has a different surface area than a flat timber. We must account for the curvature and size of the log so we don't end up short on stain. Select your log type
Maintenance Coat
Most maintenance coats are done with one coat, often clear. If you plan to add a coat of color and a clear, feel free to ask one of our specialists for some advice.
Surface Condition
Rough logs will take more stain than smooth logs. If your logs are rough, check off the box and it will calculate based on a rough surface.
Note: All calculations are estimated. Actual coverage will vary based on surface condition, species and moisture content.

We have used Sikkens for the past 15 years on our log home and always been very impressed with how long it lasts. We don’t mind paying a bit more for the quality.
Robert Lorenz –
I inherited my grandfathers wood cabin and he has been using this stuff for as long as I can remember and swears by it. He was just using the Cetol 1 and I learned there should be the 23 top coat on there too. It’s getting harder to get, but I didn’t have any issue getting it here and they shipped to me fast too!
Neil Wright –
We used the Cetol 123 system on our cedar sidings and have been thrilled with the results. We probably waited too long in between maintenance coats, but still happy with the way it looks all these years later.
Joan Gregorich –
We bought a 25-year-old PanAbode log cabin 27 years ago. It had been allowed to weather grey and had black mildew/fungus stains along the bottom metre of walls. We sprayed the cabin a strong alkaline spray to remove the weathered surface, sanded the nap off everywhere (huge job!) until we were down to fresh red cedar (it still smelled of cedar even though it was 25 years old!) and then did the full Cetol treatment – one coat of Cetol 1 and two of Cetol 2/3. In 27 years we’ve redone the Cetol 2/3 finish coat three times, except for small areas that get a lot of wind/rain, where we’ve had to sand down to bare wood and do the 1 and 2/3 again. This is a different stain treatment and we wouldn’t use anything else. Yes, it’s expensive but not when you think of how few times you need to redo it. Our cottage looks like new and it’s now more than 50 years old. We’ve added new buildings to the property, sided them in cedar, and finished them with Cetol so they all have the same woodsy look. We think it’s beautiful
